Best Practices in Mine Reclamation in Arizona: Guidelines to Address the Challenges

Successful reclamation of large land areas following mine closure is a critical component driving the social license for future mining. Site revegetation requires engineered ecosystem regeneration on mine wastes, a process that must be tailored to the unique challenges of each mine site. Guidelines are needed to apply reclamation technologies to a gradient of conditions because reclamation is site- and waste-type specific and particularly challenging in arid climates such as Arizona. Technological advances learned from research and site-specific applications have not been translated into guidance documents for use by reclamation practitioners.  A Best Practices Guideline for Mine Site Reclamation is needed in Arizona to combine expertise from diverse stakeholders and research results for application across the gradient of environmental and site conditions found in Arizona.
