Revegetation for Mine Waste Reclamation: Assessment of Success
Professional Development Course offered by the UArizona's Center for Environmentally Sustainable Mining.
Revegetation is a mine reclamation strategy effective for dust mitigation, erosion control, land restoration and proper functioning of evapotranspiration caps. Despite the significance of revegetation as a mine waste reclamation strategy, success rates are low in arid and semiarid regions due to harsh environmental conditions and the challenging physical properties of the waste materials. The course will provide a comprehensive understanding of revegetation as a reclamation strategy, address the regulatory guidelines that define revegetation success, and enumerate the challenges that lead to revegetation failures. The specific focus will be on comprehensive monitoring strategies that can be used to quantify progress and success over 10-year time frames to facilitate more technical assessment of the reclamation process. Short introductions will also be included on future course offerings on Metal Phytostabilization and Phytoextraction on Mine Waste AND Carbon Sequestration Potential through Revegetation of Mine Waste.
This course is ideal for environmental scientists, reclamation specialists, and mining industry professionals seeking to improve their understanding of revegetation techniques and strategies for mine waste reclamation.
